Derby back in the day

When life is good play derby, when life is hard play derby.
Easy enough to say - but it’s all about keeping the drive and the motivation to do it!

Roller derby takes a lot of time and commitment, which I didn’t realise when I first got involved in March of 2008. There are trainings and meetings to attend, not to mention social gatherings and fundraising events. And when it gets close to bout time... kiss goodbye any friends or family who are not involved with the league!

Some girls live and breathe roller derby. And for others... sometimes life gets in the way.

I’m one of those others.

I have a love/hate relationship with derby. I LOVE ROLLER DERBY but it hasn’t always been an easy track. And when life (the life outside of roller derby) gets in the way, you need a strong dose of motivation to keep on skating. All sorts of things can interfere with your roller derby career: jobs, family, relationships, friends, sickness and injury. And, Your Mind.

Your mind? you may ask. Let me explain: a big part of playing roller derby, just like many other sports, is in your mind. It’s important to stay focused in order to play the sport, and in order to be motivated to skate in the face of everything else that life throws at us.
So in my derby blogs, I’ll be sharing stories about keeping focused on the sport, and show how one can twist that mind around to stay motivated to skate. Because when life is hard... play derby! It will make you feel a whole lot better!
